Chick pea fritters


Chick pea fritters,much similar to falafel,is made by boiling and mashing the chick peas.Keeping in mind the health benefits of chick peas,I thought of making a snack out it.This recipe includes both the taste and the benefits of chick peas.

Chick peas are rich in fibre and helps in weight loss.They are a good source of protein,manganese and iron.They help in stabilizing Blood Sugar and Low Glycaemic Index (GI).Regular intake of Chickpeas can lower LDL (bad) and total cholesterol.These are just a few advantages of chick peas.

Let me share my recipe now.

Preparation Time:15 minutes

Cooking Time:25 minutes

Serving:8-10 fritters


2 cups boiled chick peas
1 tsp ginger garlic paste
1 tsp cumin powder
1 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp red chilli powder
1 tsp chaat masala powder
1/4 cup chopped coriander leaves
1/2 lemon
1/2 tsp chick pea flour
Salt to taste
Oil for deep frying

Soak the chick peas overnight or at least for 6 hours.Boil them in a pressure cooker so that there are no hard chunks left.Drain the water completely.Add salt,cumin powder,turmeric powder,ginger garlic paste,red chilli powder and chaat masala powder.
Now add chopped coriander leaves,lemon juice and chick pea flour for binding and mix well.Mash them using a masher to ensure no larger chunks or lumps of chick pea flour exists and everything is mixed well.
Finally,add chopped onions and mix.You can add chopped onions at the begining also.I added this at this stage because I didn’t want them to get crushed by the masher and get juicier.(The onions that remained on the outer side becomes crispier on frying while the inner ones get soft.)
Take a scoop of mixture and shape them into flat roundels with 1-1 1/2 inch thickness each.
In a pan,heat oil for frying at high.When the oil is hot,turn into low heat and add the chick pea roundels one by one.Fry them from all sides by constantly turning them.Once the colour has changed to golden from all sides,remove from oil and place them on a kitchen towel to drain excess oil.
Garnish with lemon,tomato and cucumber slices.Serve them with  coriander chutney or tomato ketchups.

Note:You can make any variations in this snack recipe and enjoy the benefits of chick peas.Instead of deep frying,you can also bake or shallow fry them in the non-stick pan.
